Over the years it has become more and more difficult and expensive to travel with a log of luggage. A lot of airlines started charging for checked luggage and size restrictions for carry-ons are being more and more enforced.

Two of my good friends saw this problem and decided to do something about it: they created a carry-on that can be carried on the plane, as a personal item!

Almost all airlines allow you to carry TWO items onto a plane – a Carry On bag, and a Personal Item. Most passengers use a purse or small backpack as a personal item.

However, the rule for personal items on most airlines is simply that they fit underneath your seat. Oddly, the space under all airline seats is actually quite large – if you get a personal item that fits the space under airline seats as perfectly as possible you can actually carry 4 days or more worth of stuff in it.

This means with the proper personal item plus a standard carry-on suitcase in the overhead, you can fit enough stuff in your carry on luggage that you will never have to check in another bag. If you pack 5-10 days of your belongings into your standard overhead carry-on, plus another 4-7 days of stuff into the right personal item, you’ll have enough carry on space that once you start doing laundry you can go on an indefinite trip without checked bags!

The rules for overhead carry-ons are generally that they are “45 linear inches (114 cm)” in size – which means that the length, width, and height of the bag add up to 45 inches (114 cm). The personal item just needs to fit under the seats, which are usually 20 x 17 x 12 inches (51cm x 43cm x 30cm).
