Aquafari Curacao: Explore the Underwater World on a Submersible Scooter

If you’ve always wondered what it would be like to explore the underwater world, but you’re afraid to scuba dive, then you should check this out: Aquafari.
It’s a new type of underwater activity, where you cruise around in the underwater world on a self-proppeled, submersible scooter. Sounds like fun right?
When I heard of this activity during my visit to Curacao, I immediately wanted to check it out. I convinced some friends to join me and off we where. We were welcomed by Shenna, who explained us everything we needed to know about the scooters. It turned out to be very simple: you sit on it, turn it on and steer in the direction you want to go.
The main worry any living creature that’s not equipped with a pair of gills has before submersing is: “How do I breathe?” The scooter features a bell-shaped glass container that is supplied with oxygen from a regular scuba-dive tank, attached to the front of the scooter. Just like with scuba-diving, this tank supplies enough oxygen for a 45 – 60 minute dive.
To make sure you don’t sink straight to the bottom, the scooter is attached to a buoy by a line. The length of the line can be adjusted and determines how deep you can go. Our maximum depth was six meters. This makes the activity very safe.
At six meters (20 feet) depth, nothing bad can happen. If you panic, you can always just get out of the scooter and swim to the surface. In addition, every two underwater adventurers were accompanied by one scuba diver, who gave us instructions on how to operate the machine, direct us where to go and help out in case of any issues.
Part of the fun of the Aquafari is to see your friends roaming around on their scooters. You can make funny faces, chase each other around and bump into each other. Another fun thing you can do is to position your body in a horizontal way, with your arms stretching out in front holding on to the handlebars.
Aquafari is a fun way for non-scuba divers to experience the underwater world and the sensation of breathing underwater. For scuba divers, it’s not as exiting, but it’s still fun to cruise around with your buddies on the funny yellow underwater vehicles. If you have an underwater camera, make sure to bring it and take some cool pictures.
If you happen to be in Curacao and you want to try Aquafari, you can find more info on their website. Have fun!
